Selfish to Selfless: Making a Difference as a Big Sister

In September, I made a big decision. A life-changing one that has brought more smiles, laughter, and joy than I could have ever imagined.

I started volunteering as a Big Sister, joining the ranks of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Oregon.

The idea of becoming a Big Sister lingered in my mind for years, but I couldn’t quite commit. It was my work schedule. It was leading a busy life. It was being too afraid to do it.

As someone with no kids, I was hesitant to volunteer. I was concerned about my little experience with kids, worried that I would be awkward around them or not be enough.

But after grappling with some horrible depression and sadness this year, I made a self-indulgent decision to volunteer. I needed some happiness, a welcome distraction, something to bring a smile to my face. Honestly, it seemed like a self-centered act.

And it was. But, it's one of the kindest things I’ve done for her and myself.  For me, there’s nothing more meaningful than giving a child the support, mentorship, and connection she needs, no matter the reasons.

A feeling of selfishness lead to something genuinely selfless for the both of us.

My Little (what we call our kiddos) is a ray of sunshine! When I see her, she brightens my day. I pick her up, I see the smile she gives me, and it’s like a burst of confetti, with joy and happiness raining down.

We watch otters play at The High Desert Museum, go out for Chinese food, hike Tumalo Falls, and write fan letters to Taylor Swift.

I like TSwift, but I had no idea the extent of her worldwide phenomenon and the joy she brings to her fans, especially this little one.

When my Little and I cruise downtown Bend, she'll spot a sign that reads '1982.' She'll excitedly mention how it's almost like 1989, the year Taylor Swift was born, December 13th at 5:17 am. I swear, I didn’t even have to look that up.

The thing is, I couldn't care much about Taylor. But watching my Little’s face light up with excitement and sharing what she loves makes me feel like I'm part of something special. It might sound cliché, but it's the honest truth.

She shares her world with me. And I can’t believe how lucky I am to be a part of it.

As a Bis Sister, I've found a sense of belonging and purpose that has helped empower me to confront depression and say, 'You will not define me.'

I’m not much of a pusher. But I will wholeheartedly push this.

Volunteer.

Carve out some time in your busy schedule. Find an organization, activity, or way to give back to your community that you’re passionate about. It could be a few times a year, monthly, or weekly. Volunteer with animals, kids, environmental causes, whatever it is, please, PLEASE VOLUNTEER!

Not only will the people or causes you’re volunteering with appreciate and love you for it, but the sheer joy, fulfillment, meaning, and genuine happiness you’ll experience in return is simply extraordinary.
